The sun was a blazing furnace painting the sky a deep orangish red. Today the sky was crystal clear and heat pierced through the dry Saharan desert air to prick our pale skins cherry red. As the four wheel drive jounced and jostled across the Saharan dunes with the windows open, I pulled my white scarf over my head to protect my face from the dusty sand that whirled about dangerously. We had sunglasses on to protect our eyes from the blazing and direct heat and flying sandust.
We were a convoy of 9 travellers as part of a group on 2 four wheel drives across the mesmerising Saharan desert. After the alluring and passionate cities of Marrakech and Casablanca which were bustling with entertainment and energised with throngs of lively people, the silence of the desert seemed surreal and sublime.
Windows left open; there were two heads poking out- one from the front passenger seat and one from the other window seat at the back. They engaged in constant banter and conversation. Once in a while, the tires of the car got stuck in sand and the engine revved with some extra effort from the driver pressing on the accelerator with sweat already beading his brows and he cursing under his breath. Fortunately the four wheel withstood the harsh depth of the sand dunes.
